I am a solar hot water installer and despite being biased I can vouch for the excellent efficiency and lifespan of the latest evacuated tube technology.
We install systems that should last for at least 20 years and have payback periods of less than four years. A payback period is the time it takes before the savings in electricity have paid for the cost of the system.
They will heat water even on cloudy days and if the tank is well insulated then there will still be hot water if the tank hasn't been used after nightfall.
